CLIENT - Riverfront Development Corporation
DESCRIPTION - Working with the Riverfront Development Corporation, the Auction Street round-a-bout was designed as a traffic calming element and to serve as a prominent entrance to Mud Island in downtown Memphis. Designed with safety in mind, the round-a-bout forces drivers to slow down when entering Mud Island from the Auction Street Bridge. The buffed steel sculpture placed in the center of the round-a-bout introduces an artistic element by local artist James Russell, and cobblestone materials were chosen to highlight the historical aspect of the riverfront area of Downtown Memphis. Drought tolerant landscape materials were selected to reduce long-term maintenance for the project. The scale of the raised planters and large masses of plant material were appropriately designed to make a bold visual statement while not overpowering the entrance space.
